Dark Chocolate
- 10 Dark Chocolate Facts
1. Chocolate critics will have to eat
their words; studies have proven that regular consumption
of dark chocolate will reduce cholesterol levels by
a considerable amount, and actually bring down blood
pressure. Dark Chocolate reportedly contains more anti-oxidants
than red wine or black tea.
2. The taste notes in dark chocolate surpass those
of red wine, and true chocolate connoisseurs allow the
chocolate to melt delicately in the mouth, tasting each
and every nuance of flavour. One only chews the chocolate
to allow it to melt expeditiously.
3. Most chocolate connoisseurs disdain anything apart
from dark chocolate. Those chocolates with less than
50% cocoa solids have not such a sophisticated image
as dark chocolate. Dark chocolate can be used to cap
an exquisite meal with elegant panache.
4. Dark chocolate actually tastes best months after
it has been manufactured, as some gourmets have discovered,
the bitter flavour mellows with age. While retaining
the strength of the flavour, the bitterness is slightly
lessened.
5. Dark chocolate is also considered to be an excellent
energy source as it slowly releases into the bloodstream
and does not elevate insulin levels. As a matter of
fact, dark chocolate has a GI rating of a mere 22. The
energy, as a direct consequence, is ideal for endurance
activities.
6. Even as chocolate enthusiasts are jumping with glee
about studies showing that dark chocolate reduces cholesterol
levels, it also contains the stimulant theobromine in
large quantities which may affect sleep patterns. Additionally,
too much of this stimulant can cause seizures and be
fatal to animals.
7. Alain Roby got himself into the Guinness book of
World Records by constructing a building made of pure
chocolate. The pastry chef reportedly modelled the chocolate
construction after the famous skyscrapers of Manhattan.
He used a staggering 1,000 kilograms of dark chocolate
to make the confection.
8. The most expensive chocolate Easter egg has the
power to wipe out bank balances at a jaw-dropping $50,000
(approximately £25,000). The Diamond Stella egg
is probably the topmost item on a girl’s wish
list, coupling two typically girlish desires: diamonds
and dark chocolate.
9. There are now chocolate puzzles.
Japanese chocolatier Meiji Seika has had bars of chocolate
made into chocolate polyomino puzzles. The idea of the
puzzle is to fit the bits of chocolate into different
shapes. The dark chocolate version has hexominos, where
the bits are made of six squares each.
10. Dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than
strawberries. As a matter of fact, the number is nearly
8 times the amount of antioxidants found in strawberries.
